Fading a sound out

Is there a way of using the q-link sliders (or another method) to fade a sample out? The manual is't too clear on anything like that, doesn't really explain what the layer functionality does and in fact from playing about with it, it doesn't seem to do much to me.

I would think you can apply layers to a pad with the same exact sample, each instance of the sample being at a lower volume. Then when you slide while tapping the pad, each step will trigger the corresponding sample, lower or higher in volume each time. However, I've yet to try this.

You can't fade a sound out as it's playing. You can retrigger it at lower velocities using the layer functionality after having set up the four layers of a pad to play a sample at varying levels.

One solution is to play the pad set to NOTE ON and record only as much duration as is required, then adjust the decay of the pad to where it fades out appropriately.

The layers and slider functionality are well-documented in the manual, in my opinion. The problem is that the manual doesn't give a walkthrough of WHY and WHEN you'd use specific techniques and features.

use the pad mixer, hit the pad to lower the sample level and you can fade the sound gradually out in real time, even whilst the sequencer is playing.

Can't you just change the amplitude envelope to fade down at end of sample?

Yes, you can set the DECAY to a large number and achieve a bit of rolloff effect. This is essentially the same as controlling the decay through the slider, I just figured it was faster to find the sweet decay spot using the slider rather than wheeling your number on the amp envelope screen.
