Layout of MIDI Note Numbers

I'm using my 1000 to control another sampler using MIDI, but the default MIDI note numbers in the MPC seem to be laid out strangely. I don't play any instruments, so I was wondering if there's a reason the notes are laid out like they are on page 65 of the manual, rather than starting at B0 at A01 and going in order all the way to D6 at D16.

The way I see it, I can assign notes to my samples on the external sampler much easier if I can visualize in my head which notes correspond to which pads on the MPC. The way Akai has it now seems slightly random to me...

Is there a particular advantage to using the layout Akai has provided, or should I go ahead and make a program with all the notes in order?

I think it's just so that the common MIDI notes are in convenient places, based on experience, e.g. BassDrum1 = A02, in a more central position. Seems fine to me for normal use. I can't think of an advantage to changing them for what I do.

(I also use an external keyboard to trigger melodic samples e.g. strings: hit a key to select the MIDI note - not caring which actual Pad is selected, only that I have the correct MIDI note - and assign the sample.)

I believe this is due to the original Linndrum's (or MPC60, can't remember which) labeling of drum pads by the drum names. Each pad was laid where it appeared convenient to the kit designer, and so their MIDI Note numbers were all assigned to GM2 definitions for the particular drums described by name.

Just re-number the pads (A1 = 35 etc). Save this program as 'blank.pgm' and then each time you want to create a new program, load this up from disk and assign your samples.

That's the conclusion I just got to from trying to set the default values and turning the MPC on/off a few times.

Am I the only one thinking that Midi/Sync->Note settings should be saved in flash memory like some other global settings?

Of course, saving empty programs like templates is a great function, but one template is always the more used. Maybe I should put it in the autoload folder then..
