Multitracking the MPC1000 with Cooledit sync question

So I'm an old mpc3000 user that used to use smpte for everything and now am looking at buying a mpc1000 cuz I sold the 3000, bla, bla...

Anyway, my main question is:

How does one record tracks from the mpc1000 to CoolEdit and maintain synchronization?

I want to record all of my mpc tracks to seperate cooledit tracks (kick on track one, snare on 2, loop on 3, etc) and have cooledit start the recording automatically when I hit play on the mpc. These tracks should all obviously be synced up perfectly. I'm not all that familiar with using MTC but I assume it will either be that or midi triggering.

(I have Adobe Audition, which is the next version of CoolEdit Pro after Syntrillium was bought out by them.)

I've only had a short play with this combination, but it does not look promising. The MPC reads and writes MIDI Clock (beat clock), while CoolEdit uses MIDI Time Code (MTC) (hh:mm:ss:frames). From the Adobe website:

"Use Adobe Audition as a SMPTE or MIDI timecode (MTC) master or slave to synchronize audio playback with other computers, video decks, audio hardware, or any other hardware that supports SMPTE or MTC. "

Though the multitrack interface of CoolEdit appears to offer Bars & Beats support, it's not that well integrated that it will output the corresponding MIDI Clock. The only way I can think of would be to use another sequencer that outputs both and loop the MTC internally (e.g. MIDI-Yoke).

Now I think of it, however: since CoolEdit playback timing is time-based (minutes & seconds), and not tempo-based like the MPC, I musn't expect to sync them up completely. The best I can think of is to synchronize start and stop, and fix the tempo early in the process. Both will stay in sync without the need for clocks to be synced. That will only work for complete track playback, no shuttling to half way..

Thanks for the response stereoroid. I'm actually surprised to not see more responses as I would assume many are doing this or unfortunately NOT doing this. Let's hope for the former.

So come on people, how are you syncing up in whatever multitrack audio app you're using?

i'll say first that i havent used CEP. im a mac guy. i dont even know what it looks like.

but, i think this may be simpler than you think. set CEP to whatever tempo your mpc sequence is at.

set up your mpc so that its 6 outputs are going into the inputs on your soundcard (im making a big assumption here that you have at least 6 ins or so on your soundcard. if not, kindly ignore the rest of this post)

hit record in CEP, dont worry about sync for right now. hit play start on the mpc whenever.

when youre done recording, hit stop (duh). trim the empty space from the beginning of the tracks you just recorded and slide the tracks to time 0:00:00.

that's all you have to do.

i do it this way with DP and my mpc all the time. apologies if this was totally obvious and unrelated to your question.

This *might* not work, but you can try setting up Cool Edit/Audition to start recording when you press play on the MPC. Do this in the "MIDI Triggers" area of the options menu. I think you can set up lag time on recording also, so the re-alignment you need to do (like TV stated) would be minimal or non-existant.
