hey, im having drum problems! please help!

my brother just gave me his mpc 1000, and i dont have the instructions for it yet.., when im trying to lay a drum track down, its not recording the drums the way im inputting them in, it sounds theres a delay on the drums? this may sound like a stupid question, but please help
