Did I make a mistake?

First off, this is my first post, I just joined, and I would just like to greet everybody. I have a couple of questions, I just bought an mpc 1000 off of eBay for $510. It is one of the blue ones and I was wondering if $510 was too much to pay for a used mpc 1000. It hasn't shipped yet but the auction said that it was in excellent working and cosmetic condition and it looked that way from the pictures. The reason I am asking is because I was doing some reading about the mpc 1000 after I won the auction and I read about the unreliable pads that dont always work and dont feel right and that was kind of disturbing. I really should have done more research but it is too late for that now, I thought I was getting a sweet deal on an mpc and I thought I was going to lose the auction, surely it would break $600 I thought, until I read about the problems with the early mpc 1000s. I know that I can get the new pads and I am capable of installing them myself but I was wondering if it is worth the money for the upgrade. Are the pads really that much worse? Did I pay too much considering I got the not-so-good pads? And one question I am particularly worried about, are there any other bugs with the early 1000s I should know about, is the only difference between the early and late mpc's the pads? I hope you guys can help. Thanks

i don't want to be the bearer of bad news, and i could be wrong, but that mpc sounds like it might have the old pads. if i remember correctly the new pads didn't come with the 1k until the later black version.

just because its one of the early 1k's does not mean that the pads are broken, they might be in working order but they will still be the older pads, at the end of the day they are not reliable. i've nevr used the old pads but i've heard that them breaking at some stage is inevitable.

the new pad upgrade is definatley worth it. if your serious about your craft and your music, you will not want your performance jeopordised in any way.

older blue mpc1000s and the new black ones are basically the same exept for the pads and a few cosmetic issues. bugs in the OS will not be a problem as you WILL be getting the JJOS, a third party OS which has fixed all major bugs. there's plenty of info about it on here.

as for what you paid, i'm not too sure. i live in ireland and deal with pounds sterling. but congratulations on your purchase nonetheless.

once you fix those pads and get the jjos you will be good to go. i do not want to disuade you any way about owning this machine. i've had my mpc1000 since january, not only has it changed my whole perspective on music and its creation, its changed my life aswell - i mean i fukin luv using this thing. and you will too. there's a saying we give to all the newbies here...

not a bad price, even for an mpc with old pads. realize that you may very welll find yourself putting $260 more dollars into it, however - potentially $180 for real pads (which sucks) and $80 for OS (deserved money)

if your mpc needs work, though, look on the bright side and consider yourself lucky - you have a learning experience as far as basic electronics goes

Thanks for the help, I can pretty much guarantee that I am getting the old pads, and if they come broken I am going to be really pissed because the auction said that it was in excellent working condition. So it sounds like I need to get rid of those pads ASAP, that will be difficult because almost all of the places that stock them are out of stock, I guess I will just have to wait more which sucks. Also, I didnt know that you need to pay for the updated Akai OS, if so, how much is it?

well if it does come broken, just send the fuker back. dispute iit n ebay and tell them the product wasn't as described.

the OS you'd pay for isn't AKAI, which is why you'll want to pay for it.
it's a very long story but the short of it is a 3rd party began selling a "souped up" OS for the MPC1000/2500 which dramatically increase their function and usability. google jjos for the webpage, or check out my videos on youtube:

I know what the JJOS is, but I thought it was free, I thought that was part of its appeal. But I know what the JJOS is, supposedly written by a former Akai employee, supposed to be a shitload better than the Akai OS. Could probably just BitTorrent it, although I would feel bad doing that because I would want to support whoever made it, but I dont have much money after I bought my 1000.

i dont see a reason to replace the pads as soon as you get it, if they are all working properly. You probably wont notice the difference from the 'good' pads to the 'bad' pads if this is your first mpc.

Altho i would cop the new pads as soon as they come in stock becuz i dont know how hard to get they are. Then just replace them after one of the faulty pads break.

you won't be able to bittorrent this. last guy to try to bootleg jjos ended up screwing up his mpc in a way that he himself couldn't repair it.

nope, they are WORSE than some people say. i could provide a lengthy, detailed description of why they are as bad as i say, why their structural integrity is flawed, etc etc etc, but i've done it a million times and most folks don't need convincing.

the original pad structure is DEFECTIVE, and PRObLEMATIC even in working condition.
there is 1 too many moving part in the original design, and they can/will break - which is why Akai doesn't make MPC1000's with the original pad design in them anymore.

I've got the Superman-mpc and haven't run into pad problems yet (been working with it some years now), but I'm mentally prepared to invest on the padfix as soon as one of my pads breaks...

I had some bad pads so i got the pad "upgrade"

What i didnt realise is how bad my other "good "pads actually were, until i made the change!

I have made my decision, I am going to get the new pads, I just have to wait until all of the places that stock them get them back in stock. I am probably going to put my old pads on ebay once I get the new pads so if anyone wants to buy some shitty pads be my guest, the mpc still hasnt gotten here, It is shipping from Pennsylvania, I live in Atlanta and it is in Maryland right now.

I think that I would notice the difference between the new and old pads, before I bought my mpc I went to guitar center where they had the 500, 1000 and 2500 on display and over the course of a week I logged about 7-8 hours just **** around with them, I even used the MV-8800 but I prefer Akai.
