How long do you leave your MPC powered up?

I'm thinking about a screen mod for the new blue 1000 screens that would allow users to just power off the screens back light rather than the whole machine. If I understand hard drives, it is the constant spin up and spin down that eventually corrupts and kills the drive and its sectors. So keeping it on may extend it's life also. The switch will allow you to power off the back light, effectively extending the life of the screen well beyond the 40K-50K+ life span. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Usually i dont care how my equipment looks, as long as it sounds good and does what i want. But damn, that 1k in the picture is really nice. I dont think the blue screen goes too well with my blue/red mpc, though...

About the poll: I switch on the mpc once everyday and have it running from 2-12 hours, which option is for me?

that's the nice thing about mpc500 that it has the backlight on/off switch

my mp feels like it needs to be turned off when im not using it though, hell i turn it off a couple times while using it. it just gets slow when it comes to loading things more than once.

this is my understanding also --- but the OS etc is stored in ROM isn't it? not a hard drive?

the MPC 1000's don't come with hard rives as standard.

and the JJOS actually has a feature where it stops the (user installed) hard drive from spinning
constantly when the machine is on --- just when you access save/load pages.

so if you're understanding is correct --- this JJ feature is wearing out our hard drives more rapidly?


i'm probably totally wrong on this, but i'd like to be set straight by anyone who knows...

The OS is stored on a ROM.
The JJ OS is coded so that the hard drive will not continue to spin when you're not accessing data. so there's no problem there.
I'm not sure about the Akai OS 2.11, but previous versions definitely kept the drive spinning.

i was thinking about the same when i used my mpc a lot, but when i use it for like 3 or 4 hours the thing gets damn hot that im always afraid it will eventually burn out or something

posted up a while ago about that my top let pad went all gooy. but only coz i forgot it was on. i always turn it down. also most decent HDD are good for something like 100,000 cycles. granted im not sure if its differnt for the smaller lappy ones the MP takes

ya, this poll is mainly for the screen life cycle, not the hard drive. i just thought it could be an added benefit. thanks for the feedback so far. it's nice to know people are using their machines and not just forum dwellers (nothing wrong with that either).

i really don't mean to put a dampener on things... i think the product is great. i'm gonna get one soon when i have the spare cash for such a cosmetic fancy.

but i have been doing my research, and the topic of this thread has led me to ask this question on the back of my research...

but do these screens begin to fade after prolonged use? there are many people who have bought similar screens for other music equipment and reported the same problem. and didn't screen fading become an issue with the mpc60 and 3000? wich wer both blue and white screens if i'm right.

i'm just curious, i don't think a seller posting a thread questioning the lifespan of a product he is selling is too promising...

but with that said, i applaud what your doing and i will purchase one within the next few weeks, think of this as a customer query

Good point, but nothing to worry about. LCD technology has come a long way from even 5 years ago. The blue screens are rated at 50,000+ hours. Quick math makes that out to be over 5 an a half years straight. So for those who just turn the juice on for a few hours at a time, you’re looking at a lifetime of blue glow. I would be more worried about the power supply. Remember to hand it down to your kids after your done.

I just figured out an additional function for the screen and was interested in a little feedback. There are times when I think a temperature activated fan would be the next step.
