Memory Int/Ext - Quick Q

Hey,

Well if you couldn't tell by the name, I'm new to MPCs. I just purchased a 1000, and it is tight.

This "Quick Q" might actually develop into a couple but lets see where this goes.

-I purchased the 1000 as well as a 1GB card. The MPC recognizes the card, I can save my samples etc. to the card etc.

1) I have only sampled a few single shot sounds (high hats, kicks etc) and maybe a couple 10-15 second piano rolls etc. I'm just experimenting. But apparently I don't have any more space?
Now I know 1GB can hold more, say, a minute or two of total sampling sounds.

--What am I doing wrong? I double checked that I am saving to the card etc.


A bit of info in case you need to know this: I started sampling the single shots yesterday. So I sampled about 10 high hats, 10 kicks etc. I think trimmed them, discarded, and then normalized (is this the proper and best way to sample?). I then at once saved "all samples and programs" to the highest level folder (is this the proper and best way to save samples-or should I be taking the time to save each individually)?

-I did not erase the preprogrammed samples or programs, and if I don't have to, I'd rather not, for now.

So I guess this topic developed into 3 questions

1) Why is my 1GB card already fufll?
2) What steps are proper for correct sampling?
3) What is the best way to save samples?

hey dude,

welcome to the fold! you're in for some frustration, a lotta sweat and some hard work... but also heaps of fun.

1. you're getting confused here...

your CF card is different to your RAM.

the best analogy i ever heard for it (i believe it was offered by distortedtekno) was to view your
RAM as a desktop, your hard drive or CF card as one of the drawers of the desk.

you have to take stuff out of the drawers and put it on the desktop to work on it, but only so much
stuff can fit on the desktop at any one time.

so even though you have a massive drawer, your desktop is still fairly small (i think 16mb standard?)

so you need to upgrade your RAM to get more sample editing time. (do a search, or read the thread at
the top of the 1000 forum about RAM)


2. there are no 'correct steps'. if it sounds good, it is good.

however --- as a general rule i would avoid normalising samples. try to get the source loud enough
(without it peaking and distorting) or use a compressor to squeeze the sound a bit. the 1000 has a
built in compressor - which isn't great, but it can be used well for some nice effects.


3. as you are a new user you probably still have the AKAI OS. updating to the aftermarket JJOS is highly
advised!

older versions of the AKAI OS have an intrinsic save bug which WILL (not might, WILL) corrupt your data.

either update to the most recent AKAI OS, or try out the free JJOS and move up from there.

just remember, if you do install JJ --- back up all your files on your CF and then format the drive with
the JJOS
