Old style pads question

I'm planning on getting an MPC1000 and I'm currently hesitating between 2 offers at the same price.

One is a blue 1k with upgrades (mem upgrade & 2GB flash).
The other one is a black 1k without upgrades (but with new pads).

My question is: what are the pad problems with the old pads I keep reading about on this forum?
Is it possible to replace the pads on the blue MPC?
How much does it cost?

mem upgrade is like 40 bucks compared to new pads being 180 bucks

All the web stores I've checked have the mem upgrade at around $150.
Are you using any generic mem upgrade, instead of the official EXM-128 ? If so, what are the specs?

Also, last I heard it's a month wait for the pad upgrade.

are the pads that much better ? and what a swizz if they palm you off with shit pads!
