I have a question.

Let's say I have a long sample. With the MPC 1000, would I be able to assign this sample to different pads and adjust the attack and decay of the sample on each of the pads, thereby having one pad play only a part of the sample and another pad play another part of the same sample, etc.,?

That's not exactly what attack and decay settings accomplish, though you could emulate it.

Attack sets the amount of time it takes for the sample to reach peak volume. It will still play all of the sample, you just won't hear it all at full volume. Decay sets the amount of time the sample will drop to zero volume over, and you can also set where the decay starts, either at the beginning or after the sustain. If you choose beginning, there will be no sustain portion of the sample and it will simply decay immediately after hitting the pad. If you choose after the sustain it will allow you to hold a looped note or it will play the whole length of the sample, dropping off volume for the last X ms of the sample.

It's really more of a sound design tool than a "chopping ability" tool.

too true,

I think you have to copy it to do that. or velocity to soft start or whatever the 1000 calls that.

So can this be done easily or does it require a lot of work?

You can do a kind of chopping using attack and decay and the 16 level settings....go to my website and read about it in the tips. If you can't be bothered then:

1. set attack and decay so that they are very close together. there should only be a small amount of sample playing. You have to change the decay to end i think.

2. Set 16 levels on the sample and use decay or attack as the level setting.

3. This can create some strange sounds and bits of a sample

It's not loop chopping but an unusual effect similar to loop chopping...give it a try

i still can't get it right, I have an MPC1000 and i can't find the settings for attack and decay,....How do you do that?

What i did was,..I went into the PROGRAM MODE, and went to the envelope section and here's what i did.

ATTACK:0

DECAY:100

DCY MD:START

V>LEVEL:0

THen i went to the MAIN, and pressed 16levels:VELOCITY

and it still doesn't chop up the sample. (the sample is long enough)

It just fades out the sample....is it something i missed?

don't use velocity for 16 levels, use attack!

2. Set 16 levels on the sample and use decay or attack as the level setting.
