If you're only tracking a few tracks at a time a USB interface is plenty fast. For instance, just as an example the Fireface UC is a USB interface and supposedly has lower latency than it's Firewire cousin, the Fireface 400. It's expensive, but just an example. I wouldn't totally rule out USB depending on you're situation.
