Look around on the forums but I would really suggest a used 1000. The only person I know with a maschine loves it so take that for what it's worth but an MPC seems simpler and easier to make music on. As opposed to connecting up the control surface, software, and interface(I don't think it comes with an audio interface) you have one box with all that. If you can, go to a local music store and try out both options.

As for JJOS, it is an aftermarket operating system offering features the stock doesn't. look at the comparison chart to see specifics http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~mpc1000/chart.htm

You do not need a laptop to use an MPC but it is helpful for processing the beats and making them into a song. So not vital but pretty important.

I don't like the 500, but thats just me. Try it out and look around on the forum

Also, a used 1000 is perfect but make sure it has the new pads

so my friend got an mpc60 or 40? a while ago...i take it the jjos makes it so it doesnt automaatically make the bpm shit auto or whatever it does...that shit was annoying...am i right about that?
im think now about gettin the 500 for the compactness and the portableness... but i also want some power and whatnot...is the 1000 really any different? like just more pads or what? can the 500 pretty much do everything the 100 can?
sorry if these questions have been asked, but i spent alot of time readin other posts and i find it easier just to communicate with other people than to spend hours lookin for what im lookin for.
thanks again!

The MPC-60 was the first made by Akai and it came out in 1988. Needless to say there have been plenty of advancements since then. Also, JJOS is only made for the 1000 and the 2500.

As for the 500, a lot of personal preference. I have never had one but it seems a bit lacking from my trying it out at music shops. Still, a pretty serious workhorse. A basic breakdown can be found below
