Ok I been making beats for like 3 years but never messed with midi. What I want to do is take the samples from my mpc 2000xl and put them on my laptop. I'm running ableton 7 and want to be able to tigger samples. Going to guitar center and need to what to buy. Please help thanks.

I think it's "sequencing samples" that you'd want. First, you need to have a master source to provide midi that'll be going to the mpc (midi interface or audio card w/ midi I/O) & midi cables.

No master midi I/O source, then you can't do the midi sequencing thing.

Can you clarify this:

Do you want to take samples form your MPC and put them on the computer? Or do you want Ableton to be able trigger samples? Do you want ableton to trigger samples in ableton, or on the MPC?

Also 'transferring samples to the laptop' is not going to be easy unless you have a usb device that reads the same kind of media your mpc uses (card reader, zip drive, floppy, etc).

dab is putting you on the right track...if you want ableton to trigger samples, maybe just leave them in the mpc. otherwise you can figure out the transfer thing, but then your mpc is not being used for anything...you're just using ableton ;].
