I can load a sample onto a pad [basic bass drum sound] but, when I hit the pad, it doesn't play the whole sample. Yet, when I go into the Trim mode and hit the pad I hear the whole sample and it's probably twice as loud [yes, FULL LEVEL is on].

What do I have to do to 1: get the whole sample sound to play on a hit and 2. get the volume up to max?

While there also verify release of the sample... mpc leave it at 20 by default, actually fading out the sample. In the Sample tab put your pad volume to 100, by default it will be 80. Don't know the 500, but on JJOS you can also raise the track volume from 100 to 127.

He's right.

Decay is usually set to 5 for each pad on the MPC500

In Program Mode scroll over to Decay and turn it down to 0. This may help you out especially if it's a shorter sample that you're dealing with.

Mode Button + Pad 8 (Other)
Scroll left until Master Level is set to 0dB
This will set your Master Level to maximum

To increase the volume of the individual pad
Mode Button + Pad 6 (Program)
Scroll right to Sample Level and turn up the level for the pad
