Just the midi singles from a synth, like you do with a soft synth in cubase, etc. Can this not be done with hardware via midi?
One of your biggest issues is your theory on the mpc.
It's not cubase, it's not software. Midi and Audio follows different routes (physically).

This part confuses me. Why do I have to deal with the audio if I only want midi?
Wont I be able to record midi signals in MPC and hear it from MPC's audio out, headphone, etc?
Midi cables DO NOT entail/encompass ANY audio whatsoever.

No it contains sounds and as well as being able to act as a controller.
The sounds you wanna record are IN the keyboard right? So speaking in audio HOW
will you hear those sounds if the kybd midi cable to mpc DOES NOT use audio AT ALL?

Answer: You connect the kybd to a mixer/audio interface/soundcard that has enough inputs to handle the mpc audio & kybd audio (just like we've been telling you).

Answer: Your mpc will also be connected to a mixer/audio interface/soundcard (just like we've been telling you).

Answer: Mixer/audio interface/soundcard audio will go to your computer daw.

Recap: midi and audio use DIFFERENT physical cables. Midi cables dont encompass audio at all.
sythn midi <-> mpc4k midi
sythn audio main out -> mixer/audio interface/soundcard
mpc 4k main out -> mixer/audio interface/soundcard
audio interface/soundcard midi <-> computer daw
mixer/audio interface/soundcard -> computer daw

Have you checked the 4k block diagram in the manual yet for an overview of what we are telling you?

It does have an audio out. I've made more than a handful of beats by sampling via the audio outs.
But I'm looking to use midi in order to have more control over sounds, similar to recording midi on DAW.
Can this be done?
We've all told you yes a few times now......

No its in the synth, the mpc doesnt have any sounds.
again sythn audio main out -> mixer/audio interface/soundcard
(synth audio NEVER even touches the 4k

Ah cool, I get it now. I would have to have both midi and audio cables running for the desired goal.

So both synth and mpc are:
Audio OUTPUT -> Mixer ?

I see.

Cool, got it so far.

Lampdog wrote:mpc 4k main out -> mixer/audio interface/soundcard

Audio right?

Lampdog wrote:audio interface/soundcard midi <-> computer daw

Ok. I guess those without computers can only audio-sample their synths on the mpc right?

Lampdog wrote:mixer/audio interface/soundcard -> computer daw

Must be Audio since the above is midi.

K, this is complicated, i actually drew it out. I'll need extra cables to connect it all up.

and I'll be able to mix inside the MPC with this method right? and record into DAW or any other device via mixer.

Lampdog wrote:Have you checked the 4k block diagram in the manual yet for an overview of what we are telling you?

I have, no way near what you just described, it shows a single cable running from MPC to sound module.

I'll get those cables and get recording. Though I would have to buy a new mixer/sound interface and good cables.. now remember why i left the mpc to begin with.

Thanks man, appreciate the help.

The diagram shows a MIDI keyboard (midi out), and a sound module (midi in).
Your keyboard can do both, midi AND it has it's own internal sounds and can be used as a sound module, so there, u
hook up both midi in and out. Put 2+2 together, lol.

How you get ALL your gear(s) audio into the computer will be via mixer/audio interface/soundcard.
Me, I use an old Digi 001, multiple inputs on it, I can plug in all my gears audio outs into the digi001 audio ins.
Digi001 has a pci cable that is slotted into the computer and routes into Sony Vegas (daw). In Vegas I can separate
my digi001 inputs into any track (mono or stereo) I want. ie, 8 digi001 inputs = 8 tracks in Vegas.

There are many newer and more advanced audio interfaces but this one works for me.

I'm no pro, I've only had my 4k for a few months... and I think B. Haze helped me out with this same Question....

*First connect your synth(midi-out) to mpc(midi-in..)

*Then connect synth(midi-in) to mpc(midi-out)(a...if you want, but it could a,b,c or d)

*Last, scroll down to where it says OUT 1: PART and turn your dail until you find midi-a(or b,c,d what-ever you plugged into)

When you do this make shure your the midi on your synth is progammed on midi 1... if not you will have to move over to the right where it says Ch: and look thru 'til you find what channel your hardwear is on.

I've only had mine for a few months but with the help of these guys(and manual) I'm getting better...
this is what I sound like... check me out :)

So...the key is that midi has to be set 1A or 2B from the MPC to the keyboard...
the out on the synth to the in on the MP and vice versa

then on the mp you have to select a midi track set to a channel turn off the
program so you get only sounds from the synth...
you have to configure the micron so that the midi is all channels

I put my output sounds to the record in on the MP so that I get everything coming directly to the MP
and when I want to save the file I set the mainout and create a sample...by recording
save that file to flash and upload the wav file via usb

you probably figured it out by now...
so if this doesn't help hit me and I will further clarify
I use the micron with the 1000 so its prob a little different..

It was painful reading this thread... I just thought I'd bump it so others could share the pain. :Sigh:

I don't know if the OP ever cracked this or if his 4K is still sitting in a corner gathering dust...?

:lol:

Seriously though I've lurked here since '07 and in so many threads especially the frustrated posters you have no idea if they ever found their way because they vanish or just don't wrap their heads around the help and then usually still vanish anyway.

And knowing who Rogue Scrunt was in a former incarnation makes reading this last page even funnier. :lol:

On the MPC 500, it's hidden within the options somewhere that you have to turn on the Midi out via a menu option. Try searching around track parameters (that's where it is on the MPC 500,) or again the manual should say something. Just look for track settings or where there's a midi option, it should be there to turn on.
