How do I go about downloading drum kits & sounds(besides sampling and records)? What do I need?

The ASR has a floppy drive or zip drive? Well, while you figure it out, get an external _drive and pass files from your PC to that and after put the disk into the ASR. But check out what files the ASR can read, most likely it'll be a [email protected] format.

What's so wrong with sampling?
Sampling from the computer outs is still an option.

Yeah you can just sample in and never deal with the floppy. Of course you lose everything on powering down, but if you just record to your computer that may not be an issue.

tevans213, the main factor to your question is does your ASR-10 have a SCSI interface board installed? You look on the back of the machine where the SCSI label is, if you see a plastic cap/guard piece you don't have the SCSI board. If there's a plug there you probably have the SCSI board.

When you have the board, then you can look for older SCSI hard drives, generally they are 1-9GB's of storage as they are older. But that's a lot on a machine that normally saves to floppies with 1.2-1.5MB of space per floppy.

Also if you have the SCSI interface there are CF reader mods that can be done. The SCSI interface is really hard to find though. I don't have one on mine. I am able to use a USB floppy drive and a floppy I stuck in old XP computer to make discs. But I just copied the OS floppy that is needed to boot the ASR, and I got a stack of floppies when I bought it.

So the rare times I use the ASR, I just sample into the inputs and record right back to the computer.

I'd have to check about floppies just with wavs that are not already made into ASR instruments. The factory discs are already made with layers and crossfades on the instruments to load into the 8 instrument banks. I can make the instruments on a computer with Chicken Systems Ensoniq Disk Tools, but without SCSI I have no good way to transfer that data into the maxed 16MB of RAM on the ASR 10.

I'm no ASR expert at all, I just got a good deal on mine, and they sound just fantastic. So even just sample in then re-sample to the computer is cool as it makes everything sound great.

Check the long ASR thread here. viewtopic.php?f=42&t=106526&hilit=ASRonians

It's packed with help, although a long read. The folks in there know way than me about this great machine. I got mine fairly late, less than 2 years ago, but it's a 1992 machine.
