This is difficult to answer without an idea about your sonic destinations...
An excellent, yet affordable „ambience designer“ is Valhalla Room
https://valhalladsp.com/shop/reverb/valhalla-room/Sonsig Rev-A is plain simplicity on a fairly variable reverb processor inspired by a couple of true „classics“ (but not an exact emulation), of course with outstanding tone
https://relabdevelopment.com/product/sonsig-rev-a/(both developers have a very high reputation)
Sonsig may allow a bit more atmospheric creations than Room, but they rather complement each other. Both plugins sculpt the virtual ambience, but don‘t blur sound.
On the other hand (in the atmospheric domain) there‘s a vast area for experimentation with (supposedly) „crappy“ vintage units (cheap), but that includes to connect external gear.
It’s off topic in regard to the question, but worth considering.
Example: I once bought a Roland ME-5 guitar pedal for it‘s midi features (50 bucks) and discovered it had a great lofi reverb inside
and recently added an SRV-2000 (same era).
Such reverbs definitely have flaws compared to modern VSTs, but they may create a highly specific atmosphere for that reason (and for their analog outputs).
Lexicon Alex, Alesis Microverb, Yamaha SPX90 and similar units can (but don‘t have to) be the icing on the acoustic cake.
