chopping/sampling

whats the difference, if any, between chopping a sample and merging? it with drums as opposed to just placing the drums on top of the sample?

chopping - slicing it up into pieces and placing those peices on different pads.
merging - take a sample and merge/mix it with the other.
layering - adding a sample(s) on top/bottom of the original.
