Extracting from songs

Hello there. Im a newbie here and Ive just started experimenting on my laptop with Ableton Software. My question is - is it possible to attain a software program that allows me to dissect and breakdown a track. As in split it up in beats, chords, guitars and so on which will allow me to sampl various segments or parts of the song. IE use the drums of Song A and use the chords on Song B. Any help Much appreciated thankyou.

you can use filters and eq's extract sound from different frequencies, but you need to realise that the frequnces of different instruments cross-over. so no, that is not possible (presuming you are talking about extracting tracks from a mixed down stereo song).

yes that is correct. For example i wanna extract dr dres drums from one song and alchemists chords from another.

...sample both and then play with the auto filter in ableton.

abletons a great piece of software, get creative with it. if you really want dre drum sounds you can always buy one them kits online.

i'd recomend making your own sounds, sample from some old vinyl and tweak them to sound how you want. its a lot more creative and you will learn a lot more from it.

yea that wud b cool man. but how do i sample the song from a vinyl. all i hav is a laptop and the sofware. yes it is a gr8 piece of software i really enjoyed the live tour aswell vvery educational!

first, you gonna need an audio interface for your laptop (an external soundcard that has an audio input). might as well look for something that has midi in/out to.

then you need any old turntable and something to ground it with that also has an audio out (a DJ mixer).

- audio interface
- turntable
- dj mixer

dont worry about spending a lot of money on any of these while your starting out.

if you wanna skip grounding the turntable and the buying a dj mixer you could get a numark pt-01. its a portable turntable that doesnt need grounding and has a built-in amp. there quite cheap. vestax also do a similar turntable.

m-audio do quite cheap audio interfaces. a half decent audio interface should be your priority.
