does that mbox have a midi input port?

if so, run a midi cable from the mpc's midi output to the mbox midi input.

configure your software so it receives midi on a certain channel.

get a track on the mpc to send midi to that same channel.
configure the midi note pitches the way you want.

run an audio cable from the mbox output back to your mixer or to the mpc's audio in...

you can sample the sounds your software is making, or use 'audio thru' to hear it that way.

it all depends on which version of the mbox he has. If he has 2 is has midi if not he has to buy a midi interface which them he can use the RTAS version of sonic synth in pro tools which should be able to be controlled by a MPC

quality matters but its not as bad as with sound cards...

a decent 1x1 midi interface dont cost much, sub 100 for sure.

u didnt mention a controller?

you mean like a keyboard that connects to the computer with usb...

then yeah that should work, if that's what you want to do.

'recording into' the mpc and 'sampling' into is basically the same thing.

the only choice you need to make is whether you want to record whole loops into the mpc or just one note at a time and work with that...

either way has benefits, you will end up doing both eventually.

i recommend this:: first put some good drum samples on your mpc so you can lay down a basic beat. get the beat going, get into record mode. then jam away on your usb keys and play the softsynth... if you get a good riff, just hit record on the mpc and record a couple bars of the riff. then put the riff into a pad and sequence it into your loop. rinse. repeat.

then if you want to edit more later you can slice up the riffs to grab individual note hits and make fills/variation whatever.

but its all about how your mind works and how you want to build up a song.
