depending on the multitimberal capabilities of the Motif rack, each timbre of part can be assigned a midi channel and played simultaionously (spelling?)

this really increases the musical scope you have to create with.

I own the motif es rack. Multi mode enables you to assign 16 parts (sounds) to 16 midi channels. If you decide to slpit the midi channels with another module, the utility mode lets you turn midi channels on/off.

ok...but when i put it on multi mode...i feel like i get less sounds....is this true?\

Performance mode has 4 parts mapped/layered. The preset multis may not have all 16 parts loaded. The unused parts have that grand piano program I think.

do you just sample the sounds or do you actualy use its full potential with midi and all....using the multi timbre funtion and what not

I haven't sampled anything from it yet. I didn't comment on the controller portion of your question because I'm using an Edirol UM-880 midi interface. One of the few that can be used freestanding-hardware only. I play the sounds with an Alesis midi keyboard.
