MPC 2000 to Keyboard MIDI?

Okay so heres the deal, im trying to record some synth sounds over my tracks on my mpc, I have the midi in on my mpc and midi out of the keyboard, but the problem is, i try to record using the mpc while playing the keyboard, and when I play it back, I dont hear anything. The Mpc's sounds are already loaded up in the keyboard, but I just cant seem to record the keyboard, onto my mpc tracks? What am I doing wrong here?

i don't know much about midi, but- check at the bottom left of the main screen on the mpc. Is it on a drum track or midi track.

I have a really cheap radio shaq keyboard, but it has midi ins and outs, so i figured i was good to go??
