do VST's sound good

so another newbie question.

I want to cop a midi keyboard for use with my 1k because i don't want to JUST sample. Sometimes i think like a certain chord progression would sound sick over a sample i have etc.

I don't know a lot about midi but im told i need VST's to actuallt get the 'sounds'. I know midi is just control data.

My questions: do vsts sound real? where do i get hardware that i control with the midi keyboard? is it better to use software VSTs?

2. if you are looking for a sound module, you can get them at guitar center, or probably most music stores. i would check pawn shops too.

3. thats your call. is it better for you? its better for me because i have some decent vsts that came with my daw, and there are a lot of interesting free ones out there. i also have purchased a few which are better than some of the free ones, not all. if you a vst, process it or whatever, you can get some cool sounds. as far as better, i dont know, its up to your creativity. if you cant tweak a decent free vst into something other than a preset, you probably wont be able to on a hw synth/sound module. why spend the money?

compared to sounding cheesy and digital. Like if i get a piano vst will it sound somewhat believable as a piano?

like lamp said there are free ones everywhere. there is a pretty good size data base but i cant find the link right now. do a search for free vst's and see what comes up. also you might want to look into soundfonts if you are looking for realistic sounds, if your software supports them.

thanks for the suggestion of grabbing some vsts first to find out but as I was saying at this point i don't have a midi keyboard to test them (although i could use my mpc i don't have the midi ports on my soundcard. I was just going to use the USB connection on one of the m-audio keystation controllers).

there is a plugin that turns your typing keyboard into piano keyboard. i cant remember what its called, and i cant find the page that has it. there is probably more than one.
