chopping samples in record mode or while playing?

aiight, so i might be missin somethin but is there a way to chop the samples and record them at the same time in record mode, or a way to chop the samples using and assigning the pads while the full sample is playing? i just wanna assign the pads to what i hear by chopping them in time when i hit them. i just cant figure the sh*t out but i thought i saw it done before. MPC2500. THANK YOU in advance.
