REASON & MPC - Please Help - Major Ongoing Problem $$ Reward

hey guys, ive been using my mpc and pro tools for years now. ive mainly been a sampling beatmaker but recently ive been to trying bring reason into the whole mix but i have ran into problem after problem. if anyoen can help me through this whole process i will be happy to return the favour $. i know it seems crazy but its just that i have tried to sort this problem out so many times and it is frustrating me so much! : (

first of all my goal is to do just this...

make a beat by doing the drums on my mpc and recording like 6 (as an example) different synths from reason as midi tracks onto my mpc..

mpc - as my drum programmer and to record all my midi sequences from reason

reason - sound module

pro tools - to record everything for final mix down


my set up is...

* mpc 4000
* digi 002 mixer
* m audio midi keyboard
* pc with pro tools 7


the way i have everything set up at the moment is..

midi keyboard - usb cable out of the keyboard into my pc aswell as midi out of the keyboard into midi in 1 in my mpc.

mpc - main audio output straight into my digi 002 mixer
midi out straight into midi into my digi 002 mixer


im using my digi 002 as my midi interface and that only has 1 midi input and 2 midi outputs for now im happy with the using that as an interface instead of buying a interface with 4 outs and 4 ins as i understand you get 16 sounds per input. 16 sounds is plenty for me at the moment.


in my pro tools session i have set up...

audio track 1 (for my mpc)
audio track 2 (for reason)
midi track 1 (for reason)

i don't want to have each instrument in reason rewired to pro tools so they have there own individual tracks in pro tools as at the moment im struggling to even work with more then one sound so i want to have audio track 2 in pro tools to control the volume for all the levels in reason.

i can do all of this fine but the BIG problem i have is that i can only control one sound. my idea is that having everything set up like this i would have like 3 synths in reason going through there own channels in the midi interface and on my mpc i would have 3 tracks set up (1 for each synth) and i could playback all 3 synth tracks at the sametime whilst playing the drums on my mpc pads. at the moment i can record one sound onto many different tracks on my mpc but when i try to record another sound on top of that in a different track i can't. it just changes the synth sound and the previous tracks i recorded are then playing back with the synth i just selected instead of still playing back the previous tracks with synth i originally recorded it with.

do i need a midi interface with more inputs? i assumed that just using my only midi input on my digi 002 would be enough as ive read that you can have 16 sounds per channel.

help is greatly appreciated, i would pay anyone cash on here that can help me through whole process whether its help with setting in reason or my mpc or plugging my set up a different way, if somene can help me eliminate this problem i would be happy to return the favour.

yo mike man i had that exact problem when I used to track out to Cubase. I have TONS of VSTi's and i was never able to use more then 1 at a time. i know its possible but I never figured it out. i spent a lot of time checking my connections and trying out every possible way, but i never figured it out. im not sure man but good luck and if you figure it out, please let me know!

16 sounds per channel

no, it's 16 channels per MIDI cable.

it sounds like you need to assigne the MPC's tracks to different MIDI channels, and then instead of having the digi 002's MIDI input as master keyboard change it to one of the busses for 'External Control' under 'Advanced MIDI' in Preferences. then you need to use the reason hardware interface unit to select the digi 002 and then assign the different instruments to corresponding MIDI channels.

hope this helps.

When you select your midi track on the mpc and play your keyboard, do you see the midi LED light up for the corresponding track on the midi in device in reason. if so make sure that you assign your snyth in reason to a midi channel on the midi in device interface. then unselect the instrument midi in the sequncer track at the bottom.

if you do not see the LED light up, then reason can not see your midi device

thanks heaps to everyone for there reply. the thing is when i have reason up in pro tools that means pro tools is using all my midi ports etc etc so when i open up reason in pro tools.. reason says that all the midi ports are in use. pro tools makes this so much complicated as it looks so basic how some dudes do it in the videos posted up on the net of them using an mpc with reason

oh and maxim, at the moment its not lighting up when i hit the pads on my mpc or keys on my keybaord. im getting sound but its not getting a signal through reason interface. is that because i have it set to my usb device? because thats the only choice i have as in reason it says all my mid ports r being used (guessing that pro tools because that only happens when i have pro tools loaded up)

i got a problem like this but im using cubase sx3 the thing is cus i have the rack i have to u have the pc on so i go into cubase sx3 then rewire then click on reason but then i get this message MIDI PORT MAYBE IN USE BY ANOTHER APPLICATION so i went in to pref on reason tried changing to digi 002 port 1 still not working
im tryin to use the sounds in reason to add to a beat i did on my mpc 2500 then record on cubase
