Note Value and Swing Feature

Whats good everyone,

Ive been using my 1000 for a few months now and ive been reading the manual to immerse myself with it. However, I really never had any musical experience so I dont really understand the note values or how to use the swing feature. Can someone enlighten me, I've been pretty much having everything at a 1/16 with a 50% swing but I really just lay my snares on the 2nd and 4th beat of the metronome than my kicks around it. I really want to get a a grasp of this since I feel at times my drums are a bit stiff. Thanks, I know I'm still a newb!

hey mate,

why not try moving individual notes around a little?

for example - say you have snares on one track, use SEQ edit to move them
all early or late a few ticks... see what you think of the way this changes
the groove.

or go into step edit (grid edits better if you have JJ ) and move
notes around off the perfect quantise spots.

or why not turn T.C. off all together? either on the whole beat, or quantise
the hats and then just feel out the kick/snare live - if you've got a good
sense of rhythm this is a nice way to humanise your beats (and if your
rhythm needs work, this is a good way to work on it! )

and definitely play with different swing settings between hats/kick/snare to
help keep the groove moving.

and maybe source a few percussion samples - cabasa, shakers, congas etc
- just to emphasise certain beats.

main thing is just to keep doin it, it'll get more natural.

thanks for the advice man. So how can I quantize beats separately, say I want my snare at 1/16 but the tc for my kick off. How would I do that? Thanks!

when you highlight timing and hit open window, you can hit any pad you want to edit that specific sample. when you hit the pad you want to edit, timing only affects that pad you hit.

timing corecct only works with the notes your playing at the moment, so if you do your snares at 1/16 then lay all those down then go back and turn t.c. off for you kicks and it will all work out, but you gotta remember what some of your stuff was timing corrected at before if you gota go back and re do a hi hat or snare or whatever.
