the reason i dont like akai mpd 24/no loop record (advice??)

i just borrowed my freinds mpd and i hooked it up to my computer using acid and battery 3. i was messing around with it in acid triggering some drum sounds and i realized, THIS SUCKS! it doesnt have loop record like a mpc does.

its like live playing the whole way trough, live, and my drums sound like shit! is this possible to do with an mpd? does my daw just not have this feature? what about if i used another one? reason? protools? some advice would be greatly appreciated!

im trying to find out what i like more, i already own a mpc 500 but i want to take advantage of battery 3 becuase i spent a bunch of money on it! is it possible to have loop record with this controller?

in case you dont understand what im talking about, im calling loop record, like when you set up your 4 bar drum beat and then you lay down all the kicks, and after 4.4 it repeats back to 1.1 so if you missed a kick you can put it in again after the loop repeats, then you can go in and put your snares on a different track.

this has to work on an mpd, it would be ridicoulous to have it just be live...

fl studio can do it, and so can cubase sx. i use both.

most d.a.ws' have a loop recording function. Once you cut the looping feature on then you set your recording up and let it do what it do. What version of acid you use? I have acid and it has a looping function on it. Remember you have to cut the loop function on in most d.a.ws' it is usually not set as a default.

i have acid pro 5.

i set it up when i record, and i have the loop on it records and the timeline-line loops after it reaches the looping point but when i push record and i record for more than the loop region, the part i recorded will be way further back than the loop.

howd you set it up in your acid? i looked for loop record to no avail..

Yo Damien, I just checked acid 5 out and i could not find the overdubing feature. I saw were you could insert midi data manually clicking the mouse, but dat was it. I am sorry I was wrong about Acid 5 . In Reason 3 you can set the transport to loop and to overdub, which will add midi data to your existing midi data that you first recorded. You can overdub in cubase also.

Which version of FL u runnin? In FL 7 there is an icon next to the snap settings section. The symbol that is a R with an Arrow next to it is the overdub, loop recording function. Hope that is clear.

Damien- how did you set up your computer to have the MPD trigger the battery drums in ACID? That's exactly what I want to do, but in ACID pro 6. Also, how did you map your drums in Battery to the MPD pads?

I'll be using an MPC1000 as my MIDI controller but that's the only difference

first i went into the insert sofsynth window, then inserted battery 3 so it showed up in the corner and stuff.
insert tab>soft synth >then selected battery 3

then i used the "battery" setting on my mpd. i didnt get to map it out though my computer got a virus on it and i had to take it in to the repair dude and my acid disc is back at home in alaska and im living in canada now.

so i would push a pad and it would trigger whatever then i would push the next pad and it would trigger something else and i would just move the hit i wanted on that pad to the "something else square in battery.

ie. if i wanted a kick on pad 1 and a snare on pad 2, pad one woulod ususally have a kick sound and if pad 2 had something messed up on it, i would just check to see which box it was triggering and i would move my snare sound in battery to that box so when i pushed pad two, it would trigger the snare. i didnt figure out how to map the sliders and pots on the mpd with acid though but im sure you can if you just mess around with some settings and stuff.


when you plug in your 1000 to the computer make sure its plugged in before you open up acid or the program wont recognize it.

Not really as the MPD is not a sampler, just a controller. The only thing controllers do is send MIDI information into your MIDI chain to trigger another instrument(s). Any looping is supposed to happen on the sampler end, hardware OR software, not on the controller end....
