School Me On What A Zip Drive Is For And What I Need To Get

OK, so I'm not new to production, but unfortunately new to the MPC. I am borrowing a friends 2000XL (who doesn't know anything about it).

Seems like when I've seen peoply using them before, they use an external Zip Drive in conjunction. I'm assuming that it is used to save the beat on once you're done? Can it save pad sounds so I don't have to load them everytime I turn the MPC on?

I guess I'm just trying to find out what I need to tell him to buy and how to use it properly.

I would recommend going with a internal card reader. But yeah a internal/external zip drive will allow you to save your sequences, sounds, pgm,ect... So if you have sounds loaded on pads 1, 2, 3, and 4 then u would want to SAVE that as a PGM so u dont have to load those 4 sounds to the pads when you power up again. All you would have to do is just go to LOAD and find that PGM and load it. Now sounds 1, 2, 3, and 4 are back on the same pads you left them on. Real easy and simple. i'm new too, but i've got a bit of sp303/404 experience, had the 2000XL for a week and slowly getting to grips with it. just been sampling, making basic beats, and chopping so far.

a zip drive either internal or SCSI external can be used to save your samples. your arrangement of samples on the pads can be saved as well, this is referred to as a program. anyone around here will recommend that your friend gets a multi card drive, so that you can save up to 1GB of data on MD/SD or CF cards as oppose to just 100-250MB on zip disks. I've got a CF card reader installed in mine.
saving samples, assigning to pads and saving as a program is the very first and most basic thing your friend would have to know about the 2000XL, if not it's just one hell of an expensive paper weight to have lying around.

so if he decides to go with the internal drive (which seems like the best option), that would take the place of the 1.44MB floppy drive thats already installed?

any specific brands of drives you recomend?

If having an external drive attached to it isn't an issue, I would recommend SCSI hard drives as a cheap option to the card reader.
