best method of recording into mbox/protools etc

hey dudes,

probably a stupid question.. i apologize in advance. lol

but anyways.

so ive been making beets on the 500 for a while now, looking into getting a 2500/1000 in the near future, along with an mbox/protools bundle

i used to go over to a buddys and make beats, record them out of the stereo out of the mpc into the mbox, right into protools..
the thing is, im confused when trying to figure out the best possible method for tracking each individual track out into protools using an 8 channel mixer in the equation.

the part that confuses me is mainly this :

would the ideal and proper way to properly track the beat out be by : running the midi out of the mbox into the mpc midi in (for the beat clock mainly).. and then i know i can do the stereo outs left and right on the mpc into the ins on the mbox, but say i wanted to use all 8 outs on an mpc 2500, i cant figure out how i incorporate the 8 channel mixer back into the mbox/protools...because i would still need the mbox......any feedbacks appreciated hombres. peace

that being said, to get the beat clock recording all of the 8 tracks at once, while i have the 8 audio outs on the mp going into the 8 in the mixer, would i midi the interface into the mixers midi?...

im using the 500 right now, no mixer, no mbox or protools, but soon the 1000 or the 2500/protools with an mbox 3rd gen and an 8 channel mixer

I count 6 inputs on the Mbox 3 Pro, counting the combo jacks on the front, perfect amount for the 1000, only 2 short on a 2500, and the mixer is always a help there.

Even a cheap Mackie can add some warmth to the signal and it great to have some hands on channel controls.

if i want the beat clock setup, would i run the midi from the mixer instead of the midi from the mp, into the mbox?

^right, but if i do that, will the audio from the mixer be the audio thats going into the daw?

What is the point of the mixer?

Why not just run straight into the MBox?


I wouldn't rely on MIDI clock for sync.

The mixer would not need MIDI clock, unless maybe it had automation or tempo synced effects, but that is doubtful.

What Lamp is saying is that the MIDI cables and MIDI sync aspect are wholly separate from your audio. So the mixer being involved has no effect or bearing on the MIDI at all.

And if your reasoning on wanting to use the mixer for say it's EQ's or other FX rather than plug direct to the MBox, totally good reason, totally doable. Again your MIDI would just go MPC to Mbox, while the audio cables would go MPC to Mixer to Mbox.

So you're fine with the set up you're picturing.

thanks for anyone else to popped into the subject i started, i really appreciate it.

if i dont get an mbox with more than 2 channels..which i probably wont, im just kind of bummed i wont be able to track out each track at a time........

id probably just have to do each at a time, solo'd or muted.

Im just a little worried though, because the clock wouldnt be set up, might it be a problem trying to track each one at a time? i dont know fukk. i'll figure it out i guess lol
