Hi all,

I have a MPC Live 2 and am new to the machines.

Many times when recording a four bar sequence in a new project the sequence doesn't loop correctly on the 4:4 back to 1:1. The sequence will loop at 4:5 (which obviously doesn't exist) but there seems to be a 'ghost beat' which then throws the timing off everything I am recording, which as you can imagine is frustrating as the machine won't record and playback a basic loop correctly.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a known bug or common fault?

I am running firmware 2.9 by the way.

Any help would bed much appreciated.

Did you examine your seq in grid edit?

Are you playing to a click track? Do you have Timing Correct turned on? On the Main page Sequence section what is your Bars, Start, End?

I suspect it's a case of needing some practice... but if you need help... the quickest way to get it would be to record a video and show us what you're doing... one of us can help you with suggestions on where you might be misunderstanding something.

Yes I am playing to a click track, timing correct is on 1/16 and the bars start/end are 1/4, Which is all normal.

I record a beat to the click track which isn't perfect but which the timing correct 1/16 should quantise correctly but when played back it takes some sounds well out of time, the white bar which runs across the top is running for one beat longer than Bar 4, Beat 4 before looping back to Bar 1, Beat 1. Which I believe is throwing the timing correct off.

I have recorded a video, how do you upload to the thread from a phone?

Hi yes the grid edit just runs up to 4.4

I guess I haven't seen that before... but you are suggesting that it is playing to 4.5 or 5.1 then? Can you seen the loop bar in grid mode going out beyond 4.4?

Yes you can (when set to NOTE ON where you hold the pad) and it's why I said look at the end of grid edit. Notes can extend to 4.1 but for a retrigger that may be a problem and some tweaking would be in order.

Using ONE SHOT you will only see a short note event in GRID VIEW, you'd have to go into sample edit or envelope or something else to shorten and tailor it to length.

The counter text at the top doesn't visually count to 4.5 or 5.1 but the duration of the loop and the white timing bar extend one beats worth after the usual correct loop point at 4.4. I have had other projects where this has happened but the after resetting the machine it resolved itself but not this time. Also it is obviously frustrating to have to rely on a hope and prayer when restarting to allow the machine to perform a basic function in a new project haha. So was looking to see if this is something peeps have encountered before.

And the loop bar in gridmode doesn't go out beyond 4.4

I know that the notes can extend beyond the looped grid if you hold it down... which can cause some awkwardness in the looper depending on how notes are triggered as one shot or note on... Discopete hasn't been fully clear... though I think you're right, from his last post indicating that the note extends beyond measure 4.

Discopete... a long note trailing beyond 4.4 still shouldn't throw timing correct off... and it's likely that you're expecting something to work a way it doesn't work. I still believe posting pictures, video, or any way we can see what you are encountering would help us give you some guidance.

Pics or video.

Notes extending past a point could mean your hearing it or your seeing in grid edit.

Did you recently update firmware, if so, did you do a hardware reset after updating?
Did you update and went right in to an old project from prior firmware?
Would you be willing to send your project to someone who can possibly help troubleshoot?

The red bar is showing you where in the sequence you are. The white bar is just trailing the red bar. If you're trying to visually play to the white bar then yeah, you're going to be off a beat or so.

You're probably better off playing to a click track to get your initial drum pattern down.

The view from the main page isn't really telling the full story though... have you looked at the grid view to see where your notes are actually landing? Have you tried programming your drum hits in through the step sequencer?

The drum hits are not straying beyond 4.4 in grid view, there is no beyond 4.4 in my grid view.

What I initially recorded was more or less in time and it's when I have pressed play start after recording it plays back like that, totally out of time and not quantising to the nearest 16th.

Can you not see the bar at the top is not looping when it hits 4.4, like... as soon as it hits the .4 of 4.4 it should loop back to the .1 of 1.1. In that video it loops back round to 1.1 at the point where beat 5.1 would be rather than 4.4 I have compared it to other sequences which are looping correctly and the timing bar is definitely one beat astray in this example. I will upload a comparison video when I get chance.
