try everything. try a little something here. maybe something there. don't try that there. etc.

if you made a list of 10 old school sounding hip hop songs with some phat drums, i bet some were layered, some weren't, some eq'd, some not, some filtered hi or some filtered low or both. it comes down to the sound, the end product. thats all that matters. there's ways to get there but in the end its just gotta sound good. i bet even some songs with phat drums they didn't do ANYTHING to. yeah imagine that. you hear the end result and can day dream all day how they made it, but don't hurt yourself thinking too hard. i'm sure they didn't think too hard about the drums and thats why they sound so butter.


can't stress it enough, just try shtt try shtt try shtt. you may come up with a way that works that no ones ever tried, maybe everyones tried it. who knows. just do it.

its true wat u said, some of my drums sounded fat but i just used 1 kick and 1 snare and no eq, layering or mixing. so it also must come down to wat u sample. if its already fat to begin with, its gonna sound fat on its own.

yeah also you can pull a rabbit out of a hat but you don't have to. start with samples that are sweet to work with. don't waste too much time trying to make some samples sound a lot sweeter than they actually are.
