NEW SETUP, DOPE ON A ROPE!

An old teacher of mine said the word flowers was first used about the time of burning at the stake (not great with years). And a flowers was an improvised propellant of sorts that a loved one would tie around the person at the stake's neck so when the flames reached it they would die instantly thus ending a long, painful death.


Not sure how true it is but it certainly sounds good.
