Do you have os v1.20 installed on your XL? If so, you can format the CF card so that it will be accessible in Windows (that has been covered here a lot).

If you didn't install 1.20 before removing your floppy drive, then maybe you can install it from a CF card (I'm assuming your card reader is an ATAPI type). Format the card in FAT format on Windows and then copy the 1.20 os file to it. Boot with the card in the card reader and it might update the os. Has anyone else done this with success?

If you cannot update the os, then you'll have to get a 3rd party program like MPCEditor or Translator in order to be able to move files back and forth.

I didnt install the card reader myself. Does this mean i have to
swap the floppy back in and load the OS. And then put back the card
reader. Will it work then?.Has anyone had this problem I just want to transfer
some sounds from the comp.

What you have to understand is that the Akai MPC format is not compatible with the Windows or Mac os. They fixed that in 1.2 and made it so you could format media in a DOS readable format. If you are using an os prior to 1.2, you'll need MPCEditor or Translator to be able to read and write MPC files on a computer.

I thought you could only update the os from a floppy drive - not a SCSI drive. Have you checked which version is installed in your MPC? Press SHIFT 8, then F3 to show the version.
