setting Time field in Record mode

I'm clearly new to sampling and have a pretty basic question. I apologize if this has been answered a million times but searching didnt help ..

I have a black MPC1000 and I'm trying to set the Time in Record mode so that I can sample. with all the other options (input, mode, threshold ..) I can turn the knob to choose my option but I CANT seem to select the time with the knob. It just stays at 00m00s. am I doing something wrong?

Have you tried highlighting the field and manually dialing it in from the keypad and hitting enter?

I hit 'numeric' and then on the keypad hit 30 then enter .. the highlighted number still goes back to zero ..

should I be able to use the dial to pick the time?
