How do I get the samples to correct pitch?

I know this sounds a bit wack but how was this done back in the day
say you sample a string off wax and then off another disc you sample a bass line
how did yo apply key matching techniques?

Just gotta use your ears until everything sounds sweet to you. There's one guy on here that uses his guitar to decipher the keys in his samples.
