Looking for help syncing my first studio setup with Ableton

Ok, so this is my first time trying to hook up multiple pieces of hardware, I'm working with a Novation Remote SL 25 Compact, a MPC 1000, a M-Audio 2x2 Midisport, and Ableton Live 7.

My question is this, what is the best possible configuration I can use in order to get everything running the way it should, and still be able to record into Ableton?

I'm not sure if this is even possible with my current equipment, but please help me out on how I can use the SL 25 and the MPC 1000 together, in sync, and able to be recorded for playback. Thanks so much, have been going gray over this all night!

Yes, I have seen that guide before and understand, I was looking for a more specific explanation, pertaining to the specific devices that I'm using. I understand how to do it with a keyboard, I need to know how to do it with the SL 25 and the MPC 1000. Thanks for the help though.

I'm back at it currently, trying everything. I'm beginning to think these 2 machines just can't work together? anyone with experience withinterfacing midi on EITHER machine??

Whats up tokinn. See there are numerous ways you could hook this up. You have to understand the best configuration for this setup is the one that fits your workflow. I have a midi keyboard that has a standard midi output, and a usb midi output. You might want to use both. send a midi cable to the mpc to control it, and send midi to ableton via the usb. Now if ableton will be running everything (your master device) then you could just connect the SL25 to the computer and control the mpc with ableton as the master. Just do a midi handshake with the computer and the mpc.
midi handshake:mpc out A > midisport input A midisport out A > mpc input 1
Now with all of this you have to go into the mpc, and ableton to setup the midi communication
One question i do have is what are you using to record audio into ableton?
All in all you have to let your workflow dictate your production setup and how its configured. Think about what you want to do and how you want to do it. Will you be sequencing with the mpc? Is the mpc being used to only playback samples? These are just some questions you have to ask yourself. Hope this long post helped you a little.

When you say how are you recording into ableton, haha, I was hoping the answer to my question would also answer that.

When you have the MPC hooked up in the way you suggested, it only inputs MIDI signals to the Ableton, there is no way to get audio recorded in this set up, correct?

I've made some progress, and as of now, I have the SL 25 running In/Out thru Usb and Out thru MIDI. The Usb does all the controlling it normally does in Ableton using Automap, and the MIDI out allows it to control specific controls thru the MIDI Mapping in Ableton.


Now I'm beginning to understand that I need either a beefed up sound card on the pc, or a seperate mixer in order to record sound from both machines. Is this right?

Correct. You will need an audio interface to record into the pc. What kind of interface depends on your setup. Do you intend to have other hardware pieces? Do you want to record multiple tracks into the pc? My interface has 8 inputs cuz i have other keyboards and stuff i record into the pc. Asking yourself these questions will guide you to what type of interface you should purchase. More than likely you are experiencing latency when playing virtual instruments cuz standard soundcards cant process info fast enough when you strike keys on your midi controller. An audio interface will remedy this as well.
