I am considering getting an MPC 60 as master sequencer/drum programmer to use with MV 8000.

I don't know midi that well, I have used the MV to trigger the SP1200 and S950, and I've used the Sp1200 to trigger the MV. That's about all I know.

I've seen videos where a guy will make a quick drum pattern on the MPC and then go to a keyboard or another MPC and play something on it and I wasn't sure what they are actually doing because I don't own an MPC.

My question is how does the other MPC or Keyboard work with the first MPC in this type of workflow?

I saw this video and I'm not sure how this guy has his 1000 set up with his 60.

Thanks in advance. I love this forum, I have learned a lot about making beats using the search function.

 It's never to late to join in on the fun. Anyhow, I'd say more than likely it's sync'd via either midi clock or midi time code.

yeah i've been a fly on the wall for a while...

If the 60 is the master sequencer and it's synced to the other sequencer, mpc 1000 for example, is it possible to play the pads on the mpc 1000 while the 60 sequencer is running and have it added to the sequence of the 60 , or do the 60's pads have to trigger the mpc 1000?

is the 1000 sequencer running off the 60 sequencer and he's playing the pads on the 1000 and it gets recorded in the 1000 but the 60 can trigger it because of how the midi is set up?

in the video the guy looks like he is playing the 60 then he jumps on the 1000

thanks for taking the time to reply

i would really just use the mv as a sound module and sequence on the 60 and just have a midi in and out on your mv to the 60 so you could play the pads and everything just gotta hit rec on the 60..i think

I think the original people who responded misunderstood your question.
They were responding as if you would be locking 2 sequencers together.

What you do in put the MV in Multitimbral mode (pg 164 of that big manual).
What that basically does is seperates the pads and sequencer from the sound module.
The pads and sequencer then only will send data out the MIDI ports not to the sound module and the sound module will only respond to incoming MIDI data not the pads.
It similar to what you can do with the 4k's routing.

The keyboard is used to enter the note data for NON-DRUM parts into the MPC sequencer.

1. The keyboard will be connected to the MPC via a pair of MIDI cables.

2. The notes played on the keyboard are recorded into the MPC sequencer onto a track.

3. When the notes are played back, they are routed via MIDI back to the keyboard which generates the chosen patch or sound.

4. The audio outputs of both the MPC and the keyboard synth are connected to a mixer for monitoring purposes.

Yeah, I didn't actually know enough about midi to know that 2 sequencers could be locked together like that, but i had seen enough videos to think that that must be how it worked.

knowing that the mv pads can be recorded via midi to the 60 sequencer is a plus for me

i've used the multi-timbral mode to have my sp1200 trigger the mv. it just seemed like a waste to me if i'm gonna get a 60 and tap out the drums on the 60 and not use the mv's pads for the samples that are in the mv, since i would most likely use the 60 as master sequencer. it just seems like it would be easier to use both sets of pads than making a program to match up the pads to trigger the mv and change to multi-timbral mode

(wish i hadn't sold the sp)

i have an s950 midi'd with the mv right now and i've been playing with the input quantize strength settings using 16th note triplets(80 on the mv) and grid quantize, trying to loosen it up and get it to swing more, i think my strength percentage was too high at first

i also use the shuffle input quantize, but mainly for hihats and snares, but the best drum pattern i like so far was just using grid quantize

any thoughts on replacing the s950 with an mpc 60?

i know the 950 has a filter and the 60 doesn't. i have an mfc 42 filter and the mv has filters too. i haven't compared them side by side yet but i will.

i mainly want the 60 because the impression i get is it's easier to get the swing you want, even though i think i have some good settings on the mv for that now
