Layering?

In terms of drums, I'm not quite sure what "layering" is. Can somebody give me an example of this and tell me what makes it useful?

Stacking two or more drumsounds on top of eachother to make it sound more dominant, lower, better, to create a nice attack and release point or whatever.
A very powerful weapon.

When your making a sandwich....

bread/bun, meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles... all stacked up.

Change up the ingredients....

Bass drum, bass drum, hit hat, etc... all stacked up.

the bigger the sandwich, the bigger the sound.
