Logic express is just fine for starters, you can work with that and learn a lot before upgrading to Logic Pro.

All you need to connect the MPC to your laptop is a USB or Firewire AUDIO INTERFACE/ SOUNDCARD WITH MIDI.

An audio interface with midi will allow you to send AUDIO (sound) and MIDI (data) between your MPC1000 and laptop. It should also allow you to monitor audio from your MPC and/ or laptop using headphones or studio monitors. Audio interfaces are available built into midi keyboards for an all-in-one portable solution, worth considering with a laptop.

Basic info on audio interfaces can be found here http://www.tweakheadz.com/audio_interfa ... r_mac.html

There are hundreds to choose from but you want one THAT CAN AT LEAST RECORD 1 ANALOG STEREO SIGNAL, which most can, and HAS AT LEAST ONE PAIR OF MIDI PORTS which some do not so check this.

It's worth scanning the PRO AUDIO section of Ebay to see what's out there and gauge used values. Names to look out for include Avid/ Digidesign , M-Audio, E-mu, Roland/ Edirol, Yamaha, Focusrite, Tascam, MOTU, Line6, Novation, Mackie, Apogee...among others.

Firewire solutions are preferable to USB due to the increased bandwidth and better audio streaming abilities.

if you don't have a soundcard, you can still get your beats into your computer/logic. just resample each track, then use the USB connection to drag and drop the files into logic.
to make sure each track lines up properly, put a bar of snare hits in front of each track when you resample.
