It there a preference setting so that I can automatically get notified when a new reply is posted rather than checking the box on each post?

not that I know of.. but on the main page there is a view your posts thing where you see if new stuff is in the threads you commented in.

Just set the box to be checked by default
CTRL PANEL -> Board Preferences -> Edit Posting Defaults
