Could be down to the accuracy of your headphones. If the bass response doesn't extend very low you might be over-compensating with some big EQ boosts to hear them in your cans, and then when you move over to the monitors there's too much low end coming through so it's distorting? Try pulling down the levels of the kicks and bass and see if that has a bearing on the outcome.

I've never found a set of headphones that have ever translated that well over to my monitors. But that's just me.

Could it also possibly be that the mixer is adding distortion? You've not left any EQ knobs turned up, or knocked one by accident?

Learn the art of EQ. It pays to know if a certain frequency is boosted too much or not enough.

A decent plug-in like iZotope Ozone will help you out tremendously in this area.
