I am new to this as in I know virtually nothing. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated...
I want to start making music. I am mainly interested in three kinds of music making: hip-hop comprised of beats and "longer" samples from CD's and potentially vinyl down the road; electronic made up of beats and "short" samples of sound excerpts rather than a few seconds worth of music or vocals; and finally (eventually) recording multiple instrument tracks and layering them together and very likely looping them (maybe 20-90 seconds worth of sample length, if that is right way to describe it).
1) I've been reading various tutorial sites and this board about this vs. that and just as I thought I was narrowing down what I would like vs. what I could afford in an MPC, I saw MPKs and an confused anew as to what I would be best suited with given what I want to create. Does anyone use MPK's AND MPC's? By anyone I should clarify that I am not talking about those who have full studios or "have everything." Would one be more suitable than the other if I don't have any other machines or software and am looking to buy one machine to do most if not all of what I want?
2) If an MPC is what I need, I mentioned that I'd narrowed my search down to the 1000 and the 2500 initially. I see the 2500 has more features (most of which sound over my head to begin with anyway...) and the two things that caught my eye in terms of differences were the CD rom drive built into the 2500 (is this true?) and that the 2500 had better pad "feel," durability and better response to things like velocity used in hitting them. Is this all true? Given that I am NEW to all this, are these features as nice as I think they are? Is the CD rom drive one even relevant if I've got a computer at home to pull samples from CD's with?
3) the what else.... what else does a person need to create music and record it? Could I pull it off with an MPC or an MPK and my computer? Would I need additional software? Any other devices (I've read mention of amp's, etc...)? How much should I expect to pay for all the cables and wiring, and all that (ballpark)?
All of this assumes an initial budget of ~$1000-1300 and a willingness to spend more as time goes on and I learn. Again, I've got a recent vintage Mac at home and would be willing to use this in conjunction with whatever hardware I would buy (if that would be at all useful).
Thanks for the help.
