bare minimum

What is the bare minimum needed to produce a beat on this machine. All I have at this point is a laptop, a fast track pro audio interface, a keyboard, and studio headphones. (meaning no studio monitors)

Is this enough?

You got me on "this machine". But from what you listed, it looks like you have enough to work with. Just save up for monitors & maybe a mixer for later on somewhere down the road.

It'll take some adjusting to get use to (on mixing w/ headphones), but once you make that adjustment, you're off to the races.

What keyboard are you using in your setup?

well the keyboard is an old yamaha with sounds onboard ranging from drums to strings and it also acts as a midi keyboard.

Its not like a motif or anything because it cant sequence or mix.

I just thought about it and I guess I might need a instrument cable to make use of the sounds that are on the keyboard already since I dont have a sound source yet meaning there would be no use for a midi cable yet unless protools has instruments like pianos and stuff. If it does I wouldnt know how to hook everything up to sync properly anyway.

Yeah, you're always able to run vsti's, but you need to read up on them & the process in general. You basically assign them then go to your daw's mixer and route them joints so you can hear 'em (in the most simplest of terms).
