I recently got a MPC 2000XL with an internal floppy drive and I'm having a little trouble loading samples onto it via floppy.

If I format using the following settings, when I place the floppy in the MPC it shows up as "Type=?????" rather than "Type=PC".

If I format on the MPC to MPC2000XL format (shows "Type=MPC2000xl" and then place the floppy into my PC and drag files onto it, I can load my folder full of files onto the floppy, but when I put it back into the MPC the type goes back to "Type=?????".

I've tried to change the "Default Allocation Size" to 512 bytes, 16kb, and 32kb and had the same result. The "File System" tab has no other options than FAT.

Am I missing something really obvious or is there something wrong with my internal floppy drive?

which OS are you using?
It's been awhile since i used floppies on my 2KXL so I can't remember if i formatted to FAT16 or FAT32 for floppies.

Windows 7 and MPC OS 1.14
Just bought some new floppys and it still doesn't work.
I'm thinking the problem is either the MPC floppy drive is bad or the drive doesn't accept 2HD floppies(?).

Alright, I managed to get the floppy working, I guess it was a few floppies or something.
Anyway, I ran into another problem after getting the MPC to read the floppy.
If I place a few files in a folder and set the folder in the floppy, I can't get into the folder in my MPC. The only way I can access files is if I place them in the floppy without folders.
Following the tutorial from this site, I should be pressing 'open window' on the "Root" folder and get inside the folder from there.
Thing is, I have no root folder.
Here's an image:

All my files are in YQIA but I can't get inside the folder.
This is as far as I can get (by pressing open window on "File=YQIA"). Pressing the cursor to the right does nothing.

Any idea on what's causing this/ what I might be doing wrong?

well technically it should be FAT12 for floppies (aka: just FAT, without the 16/32)

hey man, why not try formatting in the mpc, then create new folders on the mpc and drag samples onto it like that?

just remember, standard wave files only. Also, dont forget you can sample the sounds into the machine using the rec input and then you could just save on the mpc.... it is a sampler after all.

Yeah, I'm just trying to follow the whole guide from here step by step before I try to do things my own way.
Even when formatting on the MPC, I have no root folder and no way to create new folders on the floppy. I'm waiting for my zip drive to come in and will see if the problem is with the floppy drive, but I should be able to make folders on my floppy as well from the MPC, right? I saw a couple images in the manual that don't show the ROOT folder option for floppies.

it uses a typical tree diagram on the display... pushing left is like "CD.." and going right on a folder displays the new contents. I dont know why it isn't working for you.

I haven't used floppies for a while but I seem to remember that you can't use folders on floppies with the 2000XL, only with zips and cards.
Like you say, there is no tab to create a folder and if you make a folder on your computer you cannot navigate it when you put it in the MPC.
Not sure why but it's normal. You will have to put files on the root of your floppy disk untill your zip drive arrives.
