What sort of music are you making?
If it's hip-hop, then a lot of people seem to like the EMU "mo-phatt"

Depends on what you are looking for but I'd say Roland XV series is the most versatile for bread and butter sounds and they are like standard for studio rig... great sound... with the amount of sound rom cards available for them its a damn good buy for future expansion too. I have an xv 3080 (can take up to 6 cards i think old style jv and new style sr) but there is the xv 5080 (up to 8 expansion cards and it has a sampler and adat out) and 5050 (either of em on ebay / craiglist from $200 to $500) or the fantom xr module.
