Long story short I owned a 2000XL for years and my set up was all analog and all for my own amusement. Unfortunately the MPC died and now I'm using an SP-404. Literally everyone on the internet told me to come here and get schooled. So here I am.

My question is this: I want to be able to externally trigger my SP-404 and record/sequence everything in my computer. Am I correct in thinking all I need is a MIDI controller and a MIDI interface to do this? Please don't excoriate me as I am entirely new to using USB/MIDI/computers when it comes to music. Any recommendations?

Generous thanks in advance.

(I'm not a "producer" by any stretch of the imagination. I just like getting stoned and sampling stuff and making beats.)

Don't disregard it,

You're retarded,

You're hair parted,

When you farted,

'Cause you're a jinx,

And your ass stinks,

You're the lady in red and pretty in pink. :P

Jk, well all you really need is an interface to record the SP. MIDI controller would be to good to access synth racks within software and such, so get both.

yeah an audio interface with a midi in and out port
your just trying to use your sp as a controller for your daw? correct?
so when you push a pad on your sp, it makes whatever plugin you have in your daw make a sound and you can sequence in your daw from there.

Oh, no. I should have specified that part. All my sounds will be coming from the SP-404. I'm just looking to record/sequence what I do on the computer. Is that another can of worms?

your 404 should be able to do that, i dont know for sure,

if it has a midi in and out you should be good with an audio interface with midi in out ports. it also has audio outs that you will need to plug into your interface and your 404, this way you willl be able to hear the actual audio itself becauuse if you just hooked up the midi ports you wouldent be able to hear them. then you need to set your midi functions in your 404 correctly and set your daw up accordingly as well.

hope this helps, sorry i dont have a 404 so i cant give any specifics.
