sorry for asking so many dumb questions...but what is polyphony?? 32 note 16 note what's the difference?

example: you might see a box with specs saying "32 note polyphony", whoch is the total it's capable of: if it is Multi-timbral, it can play different sounds on different MIDI channels at the same time, but the total polyphony is still limited to 32.
