I just bought an Akai MPD32 along with a 3 year warranty from a 3rd party retailer (guitarcenter). I also purchased some Thick Pads from MPC Stuff. My question to anyone experienced on the matter is the following. Suppose i'm to open my MPD32 and add corks as well as replace the pads, then maybe two years down the line for whatever reason the MPD32 sh*ts the bed. If I put everything that came with the unit back into it and sent it back, how would Akai or the 3rd party retailer know i opened my unit, furthermore voiding my warranty? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Its like sending your kid to summer camp for a month. When he returns you noticed he shaved his head and wears lip gloss. You'll know someone tampered with his head. Same with manufacturers, they'll know if it comes back as factory spec'd or a grubby hand-job.

For what it's worth..I manage a local music retail store who sells extended warranties. Did you purchase a repair or replacement plan?

If the latter you should have no issues. When you purchase a replacement plan the whole point is no questions asked. When a customer at our store has a problem, we issue a replacement and send them on their way and we deal with the manufacturer. Time is money and more often than not its more convenient to give a brand new unit than to investigate to see if the customer has voided the warranty. GC is run by circus clowns. I think you're alright ;)

^^^ i was thinking something similar, i bet if you put aftermarket pads on it, then in the case that it did break, and you took the pads off and put the stock ones back on you would probably be fine.

You can use a thin piece of plastic or paper as a buffer between your screw's head and driver to minimise stripping of the drive socket or paint scratching. Otherwise, just be careful with the unit itself. The MPC's internals are similar to a personal computer or other device, the chance of it breaking because you opened it are extremely unlikely. They are built relatively sturdy. Remember to ground yourself/static discharge before touching or working with sensitive electronics
