A lot of the things I come across on the forum seem to be related to people working on beats for MC accompaniment (which is cool) but I've been working on instrumental music inspired by Shadow and FlyLo (some others too).

I've searched and found little things here and there but not much. So what I'm wondering is are ther people on here doing similar stuff that I haven't come across yet?

If there are people out there and they want to share ideas/techniques/whatever it might be a good idea to create a place for that.

That Copper Tony shit is bangin'

Back on topic. All I got is me when I'm makin my music, I don't know but I think I could keep shit more simple and structured if I knew an MC was gonna be on it. For now, I feel like my challenge is to keep it interesting enough to make someone wanna bump it without an MC on it.

thanks guys, here's some tips for keeping it interesting as just an instrumental:

long harmonic passages
instead of like 2 chords for example, make up a chord progression or melody that lasts for like 16 bars (amazing future dino's)

try making a bunch of different sequences using the same chops (this keeps a consistency with the sound but adds cool changeups

experiment with different time signatures and stuff like 7 bar phrases

drop those drums

remember to use a light touch
you want to keep it interesting but it also has to groove

experiment and see what comes of it!

good luck my friends :P

Copper Tony

P.S. i'm dropping a new album in about a week ( be on the lookout)

I just invent stuff. Do you and let it flow and don't force it. Its like taking a good piss.

I emcee my own stuff but really I'm a beat creator at heart. The rhymes are just sounds that coat the rhythmatic mixture with the ability to express. Inspiration comes from the records I dig and strangely, they are the ones I haven't sampled. They feed my mind and soul. Then I create that inspiration into some Ill Green music. Like an artist painting a woman's face and how he paints it from his mind type shit. Every artist is not gonna paint the same woman's face the same way, no.

Dope tape Copper Tony btw.

I'm doing/ did the opposite. MC at heart but started making beats because I didn't know anyone who made beats back then.

Most of my beats were made for MC's to rhyme over. Although I think some of the beats I do are also nice as an instrumental. About the release our first EP with my partner in rhymes and already working on collabo's/ mixtape and an album. Not having the ambition to put out an instrumental album (yet).

Have you checked out Symphony Sounds? and the MPC-Forums Mixtapes?

Also there are plenty of Shadow-ites lurking in the 60 forum, you'll find some interesting threads in there.

Some dope abstract beatmakers around here.

I was thinking bout posting this in the "what are you bumpin thread" but didn't wanna pump all your heads up  but pretty much only been listening to MPC Forum music as of the last 6 months. The ones you mentioned above, Ill Green, Es-K, Debauch, Poundaproblem, Arkyve and others when they post links in Your Music. Made it a point to follow most of you regulars on soundcloud and usually just bump my incoming tracks when I'm at work. The point was and is not to bite or copy anybody or their style but more to try and listen and pick out certain techniques being used. And I gotta admit, some of you guys are workhorses and push beats out every other day or more. That's definitely motivating me to keep it moving and not slow down.

So yeah OP, go through the Your Music thread, its a goldmine :smoker:
