we know when we here good drums, well at least i do. from what i can tell so do the big wig record execs. it's the diff btw a dope producer and an 'aight' producer......let's face it, the sh%! we here on hot 97 or any hip hop record that makes that money got u saying damn, how did he make those drums (u can usually tell when ure neck starts hurting)? right now i'm listening to some new terror squad. sick. can't wait for the mobb deep album 2 drop......gonna be crazy.

so i challenge all you SERIOUS drum heads to drop some science on us on how to bang out those ill sounding drums. the swinging drums. those drums that'll get our tracks noticed!!!

holla

A lot of the swing of my drums comes when im mixing, I try to make sure the kick and the snare (and hi-hat) sound right togethr. Lke sometimes givin the snare a little bass will get it to feel a little bit realer if you got a sampled kick.

I compresss and eq a lot of my drums. Just cuz the drums are a real important part of your beat. Put a lot of work into em. Sometimes addin a little crackle you got off vinyl will flava up the kick some.

Hi-Tek says he puts 808 kicks under all his kicks in all his tracks.

I use the low-end theory for most of my kicks, some of my snares and bassy samples. The lowend theory definitely works real good for me.

Addin hi-hats under your snares, or addin light kicks to your snare gives more flavor. Premo uses hi-hats under snare a lot, but it isnt easy as it sounds. they hafto be layered perfect or it sounds like you **** up. But kicks under your snares works alright for club tracks or just if your snaree is too light or whatever.

i start off with a reacurring kick in the loop then build off of it later after the song is almost complete.....just to make sure it doesn't sound repetitive. u def don't wanna be too repetitive....

Remember alot of yall have some good sounding drums right now, its just that your song hasnt really be master yet to play in audio players.

What no Premier?
Cause that would be my pick. I also like MFDoom's drums for some lo-fi action.

The thing with most of these platinum producers is that once the beat leaves their mpc or whatever machine they use it then goes through hundreds of thousands worth of gear before it gets to the record. Now I'm not saying that they don't have good sounds, I'm just saying that a lot happens to them once they leave the mpc.

ok, i forgot a lot of great producers.....

you're right about "after it leaves the mpc"

How come RZA's gettin no love on the board... Can't forget RZA... Changed the face of production forever... When he sampled in the "36 Chambers" days he pushed sampling to new levels... Then when he went to his "Bobby Diggy" pseudonym... He pushed out some fo the best keyboard beats (especially for the time)...

Also if you are sampling from vinyl you have drum samples that have been thru that same process of thousands of dollars worth of equipment before it touches the vinyl.......Your enviorment also plays a large part in this matter as well.......

Much Respect

What im talking about is...i had a song that i felt my drums wasnt the best but once the engineer mix and did all that he had to do my track sounded so much different. Now if you want a tip. Well i dont compress my drums unless im tring to cut off a part thats getting int he way of my kick or snare from really hitting hard(hiss, white noise ect.) cause thats what a compressor really do is cut off to level things out. Another tip is the lower end theory and thats to take one sample and dub it then lower the freq of it so its just all bass and layer it with the same kick. Another tip is to also take 2 or three samples and to keep the main sample the same speed. Next take the second sample and slow it down and maybe take another sample and speed it up. most of the time ill get a good layer sounding sample and then record it into sound forge and normalize it and thats it. If you use good samples you really wont need to do much until its time to mix the full track down......
