I'm getting my first MPC soon and the only thing I'm having trouble deciding is the speakers/studio monitors to get. I've been reading how these Yamaha HS80M Studio Reference Monitor http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QPHCB4 are pretty good.

I'm going to be making hip-hop, dubstep and drum-n-bass beats, mostly. I don't want to have to get a subwoofer, I just want two good speakers to hear all the sounds really clear on while still having a little bass kick.

What kind of speakers would you guys suggest for around ~$500/pair?

Those Yamahas are are a good choice in that price bracket. I only see one vendor I'm not familiar with selling them for $500/pair. $600/pair seems the average. They are a little more accurate than the KRK Rockit8 V2's in that same price range. I have the KRK's but if I was to buy another set in that price range I'd get the Yamahas for their differences to the KRK's.

If you were to get 5" woofers you'd really be lacking without a sub, but 8" in a mid sized room you can probably live without the subwoofer, they are still a nice luxury if you can afford one though.

There's so many other good options JBL, Advent etc, but in the $500 range Yamaha and KRK are probably the most bang for your dollar.
